Most of us are caught in an unconscious pursuit of ego protection. This results in a pattern of thoughts, emotions, and behavior that constitute our spiritual type. We have a deep-seated wound protected by a fear mechanism. Our core desire tends to be our inner drive to heal that wound through temporary means. Thomas Keating calls these patterns our programs for human happiness. On the contemplative path we’re invited to recognize this pattern and let go of it.
